Timeless pieces have a place in every woman’s wardrobe, especially those of us inching our way up in age! The older I get, the more I really try to be more intentional about the items I buy. And though I do love a good trend, my goal is to put my investment more into classic looks that will work from season to season and last for years without looking dated. I’ve put together a list of some pieces I think are timeless staples, and I’ve tried to include a variety of price points because classy looks can be found in any budget!
- Black Trousers – A true staple, well-tailored black pants are worth the investment and will pay for themselves when you factor in all of the possible occasions to which they can be worn. Look for fit, obviously, as well as seam reinforcement, zipper quality, and breathable fabric that will work year-round and resist lint. I love the seam down the legs and of course the pockets on this pair of A.L.C. bootleg pants! I also love this J. Crew trouser, which has a slightly slimmer leg, comes in three lengths, and is currently on sale!
- Camel Coat – To me, there is nothing more timeless than a camel coat, whether it is for a woman or man. The color goes with everything, and they seem to always look luxe even when their price point is not. My cape version is a find from a few years ago and is my favorite topper when I need to pull off a more polished look. This Katherine Barclay version is very similar, and I think it so ladylike and chic! For a longer, more tailored version, I adore this one from Club Monaco, and this short swing coat is great for more casual days. This is definitely an item that will never go out of style, and with coats on winter sale, now is a great time to shop for outerwear!
- Classic Tote – Other than the occasional fun clutch or maybe an inexpensive tote to take on a potentially messy trip, I usually purchase purses very rarely. I would rather have a few quality bags than get new ones each season. This Saint Laurent tote was a recent splurge purchase, sort of justified by a really nice birthday present that had to be returned. I was in need of a bag large enough to serve as my briefcase when needed, and I wanted a pretty gray leather. I’m so happy with the simplicity and understated look of this bag, and I know it will be one that I carry for years to come. The true definition of a timeless piece! You don’t have to spend a fortune though. This tote by Botkier is a great quality bag at a very reasonable price point, and this Target bag looks great in person (the online pics don’t do it justice at all) and is only $40! I actually bought the Target bag in cognac just to have something to take to baseball games and not have to worry about it getting messed up.
- Gray Turtleneck – Most all of us keep a basic black turtleneck in our closets for a good blank slate or for layering, but I love gray even more. This gray turtleneck helps your outfit avoid a funereal vibe when wearing black bottoms, and also looks great with white jeans! I’m super sensitive to things around my neck, so my turtlenecks have to have a loose fit. This one does just that and is not scratchy in the least. And the sleeveless silhouette is perfect for Houston’s mild winters!
