Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays for outfits! Think about it…Halloween is not flattering to anyone, Thanksgiving is drab, Christmas has too much tendency to be totally cheesy. But the Fourth is crisp and summery and involves pretty colors that flatter everyone! Here are some of my favorite patriot pieces for this summer:
There is just something about a flowy off-the-shoulder maxi dress, and when the fabric is this pretty, I just can’t pass it up! I was shopping for a quick post-holidays Cabo trip with my five year old, and she spotted this dress on a mannequin, quickly falling in love with it. If you know my Kate, you know she has pretty strong opinions about things and can be quite persuasive, so when she asked me to add it to my fitting room stack, I obliged. She was delighted when I chose “her dress” to take on my trip, and it felt pretty special for me too!
Call off the search…the hunt is over!! I know it’s a bold statement, but I do believe I just may have found the mother of all denim! I’ve always been a fan of flares and bootcut jeans with a lived-in wash, so when perusing new denim in stores or online, this is usually my starting point. I just don’t think you can beat the silhouette and lengthening effect a good flare provides, and with the slightly higher waist and great fading, this pair by Mother provides a timeless denim staple to any closet. You can read my tips for ensuring a great fit for flares here. Length is everything when it comes to flared or bootcut jeans, and as you can see, the hemline of this pair falls to just slightly above the ground with heels. This is only the second pair of Mother jeans I have tried, and the first pair was too short for me. So make sure you know your inseam, and if you’re are on the petite side, don’t be afraid to invest in the services of a good tailor. It can make the world of difference!
The resurgence of the off the shoulder top has elevated everyone’s blouse game the past few seasons, and it’s easy to see why this piece has become so popular. The exposed shoulders provide just the right amount of skin for a flirty vibe, but the overall cut is modest and flattering to all body types. This top is by local designer and Project Runway Season 1 winner, Chloe Dao. I spotted this silk stunner on her Instagram feed a few months ago, and I was instantly smitten with the silhouette and the gorgeous feather print. In the comments, however, Chloe mentioned she had made only a few of these tops. About a week later, as my sister and I began our annual holiday shopping kickoff at the Nutcracker Market, I ventured into the Chloe Dao booth, just in case. Lo and behold, it was in stock! Chloe was working that night, and she explained to me how she fell in love with this fabric but only had enough to make three of the tops. I couldn’t have been more excited to score this ALMOST one-of-a-kind! And what a treat it was to meet this precious and über talented designer — she couldn’t have been nicer! Although this Dao original is no longer available, I have linked several of my favorite off the shoulder tops below.
I wore this top when I was on vacation in St. Barth over Thanksgiving, so I gave it a laid back, beachy vibe with cut offs and gladiators. But it looks equally chic dressed up with jeans and heels or leather pants and booties for a cooler climate. Fun fact about these shorts: They are Levi’s 501’s and originally belonged to one of my best guy friends in high school. I begged him to give me a pair of his old jeans, and I cut them off and have been wearing them now for over twenty years!

Off the shoulder tops and dresses are all over the place this summer. I normally avoid tops that require a strapless bra, but this is a look I can really get behind, annoying undergarments and all, because it’s just so fun! The ruffle and off the shoulder design of this Rebecca Minkoff top give it a fiesta-inspired vibe, but the basic black keeps it in my zone. This cropped version touches on another summer trend, but if crops aren’t your style, I found this similar top with a longer hemline and at a great price point!
Of course nothing says summer like crisp white jeans, and I am loving this white J. Brand Love Story pair. I have long been a Love Story fan — I got my first pair, a dark wash, probably seven or eight years ago and still wear them on the reg. But this white version has been my favorite lately. The Love Story is just such a fantastic design. I love the mid-rise and fitted leg with perfect flare, and the wider waistband and hem give that extra special touch that sets them apart. There are so many good flares out there, but the Love Story is a true classic in my opinion!
If you’re looking for a fun patterned clutch to carry this summer, look no further than the accessories department in Target! Yes, this cute little woven clutch is Merona from Target, and was only $16!! Who doesn’t love picking up a fun outfit addition on your weekly grocery run?
