Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays for outfits! Think about it…Halloween is not flattering to anyone, Thanksgiving is drab, Christmas has too much tendency to be totally cheesy. But the Fourth is crisp and summery and involves pretty colors that flatter everyone! Here are some of my favorite patriot pieces for this summer:
There is just something about a flowy off-the-shoulder maxi dress, and when the fabric is this pretty, I just can’t pass it up! I was shopping for a quick post-holidays Cabo trip with my five year old, and she spotted this dress on a mannequin, quickly falling in love with it. If you know my Kate, you know she has pretty strong opinions about things and can be quite persuasive, so when she asked me to add it to my fitting room stack, I obliged. She was delighted when I chose “her dress” to take on my trip, and it felt pretty special for me too!
The warm Baja sunshine gave me the perfect opportunity to break out some of my favorite accessories usually reserved for summer, like this fun little embroidered clutch. You can never go wrong with turquoise jewelry, and it especially feels fitting when in Mexico. Winter just made its way back to Texas, but I’m counting down the days until I get to wear this pretty dress again!

If ever anyone needed to choose an outfit for my caricature to depict what I truly love to wear, I’m positive well-fitting jeans and an embroidered top would be a safe choice. I just can’t turn down pretty embroidery! This top is by Tularosa, which has become one of my favorite lines for their lovely designs and approachable price point. (You can find another favorite Tularosa piece in this blog post.) I ordered this top online, and it came in just in time for my trip out west. A Palm Springs family wedding with my daughter serving as flower girl called for early arrival and a few days at Disneyland of course, but after checking out flights, we decided the best bet was to fly into Orange County and spend the day at the beach (natch) before heading to Anaheim. I like to wear jeans on planes to stave off the freezing air and disguise any spills my children inevitably cause, so topping my outfit with my Levi’s denim jacket was a no brainer. Once we arrived at the John Wayne Airport (honestly THE BEST airport ever if you’re heading to SoCal), I quickly changed into cutoffs, and this top served perfectly as a chic cover-up en route to Laguna Beach’s stunning Crescent Bay. This picturesque cove was the perfect playground for the kids, and I had a chance to read my book without interruption and execute some serious people watching behind my sunnies!
Following our fun in the sun, we opted to stay coastal for dinner and headed a few miles north to Newport Beach for a fantastic sunset dinner at the Beachcomber Cafe at Crystal Cove. I had heard of this restaurant and knew it would be a great place to go with our kids and enjoy the views. What I did not know was just how fabulous the food would be! Anticipating a little beach shack, we were pleasantly surprised to discover a pretty sophisticated menu with fun drinks and desserts. We ordered several items from the appetizer menu, including the lemongrass chicken skewers and ahi tuna tacos, as well as the diver scallops and a few margaritas. Everything on our table was amazing, but the beignets for dessert were over the top! If you’re out that way, just do it!
The best part of spring/summer dressing for me has always been the opportunity to pull out my favorite day dresses. I adore the ease of a dress, both comfort-wise and the one-piece instant outfit effect! Dresses require minimal planning, especially when they incorporate fun design details like the pretty and colorful embroidery work on this Free People frock. Think about it…if you have a pair of pants or a skirt you really want to wear, you also have to think about a coordinating top and probably a belt, and your shoes, jacket, and jewelry will have to go with all of these pieces. With a dress, you need only worry about accessories, and for fun day dresses, metallic sandals will always be on point. Easy peasy!! These gladiators were my first Aldo purchase, and I have worn them with EVERYTHING. They are now sold out, but this lace up pair by Steve Madden has me thinking I might need a second pair of gold sandals!
I anticipate this dress becoming a heavy hitter in my daily rotation. The color makes me smile, and it is SO very comfortable! And isn’t that what it’s really about in our everyday routine? Baseball games, end of school events, summer birthday parties, and of course Cinco de Mayo will all be covered! I have linked a few other favorite easy summer embroidered day dresses below. Every closet should have at least one!

There is nothing quite like Game Day in Aggieland. The ultimate college town, College Station reaches a fever pitch on Saturdays in the fall — everyone in town gets in on the action. These days, I only make it to about one game each season, but I look forward to it for months! Checking out all of our old favorite haunts is almost as fun as going to the game itself. You know…like the library, the soda fountain, the park… 😉
The truth is, when I was in college, I rarely hung out on North Gate; I only went to the Chicken when friends were dunking their rings. These days, though, I am always drawn to this dive bar, even if it’s just to have a look around. I think it’s because, unlike the rest of the town, it remains unchanged. It feels more like a tradition than a destination, and for that, I love it. Plus, you’d be hard pressed to find a colder beer anywhere in the state!
With an impressive recruiting class recently signed and a new stadium to boot, our football team is sure to be a sight to see come September. And though our first game is still a few months out, the stores are full of cute maroon gear perfect for tailgating. (I believe we can thank Pantone for naming “Marsala,” a dear cousin to our beloved school color, as its color of the year for 2015!) Plus, the Aggie baseball team is Number 1 in the country right now, so it’s a perfect time to get ready to MAROON OUT! I’ll admit I’m not much of a “Whoop”er and I don’t know all of the yells, but I love supporting my Ags and looking stylish while doing so!
