Whether you are a hopeless romantic or a cynical “Valentine’s Day is a made up Hallmark holiday” kind of girl, one thing we can all agree on is that this “love day” is the perfect excuse to get dressed up! (Not to mention the candy!!) I ran across this flirty little ruffled number by After Market when I was recently checking out Pomp & Circumstance Boutique’s precious new Rice Village location. I’m a sucker for seersucker, and the flattering ruffled double v-neck on this dress sealed the deal for me. These ombre BaubleBar drop earrings gave this outfit the perfect Valentine’s vibe, and a hot pink lippie by NYX was just the right finishing touch for a romantic look. Although my real V-Day evening plans include ballet class, tae kwon do, guitar lessons, and the final pee wee basketball game of the season, at least I have an outfit ready should another Hallmark holiday appear on my calendar in the near future!
The bow blouse has been around since at least the days of Coco Chanel. Dubbed the “pussy bow,” this look no doubt drew inspiration from men’s neckties, providing women with a prettier and more ladylike version of the menswear office staple accessory. Not to mention giving the ladies another option for neck bling aside from necklaces! These tie neck tops became ubiquitous with the 80s ladies — Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin certainly took full advantage of this look while outsnakin’ Moramax and doing their best to save Jupiter Hollow from strip mining in “Big Business.” Although it never really went away, the pussy bow has made a pretty big resurgence in the past few years, and I couldn’t love it more! (As evidenced here.) What I love about this WAYF tie neck dress is that it offers the ladylike look of the classic style while also giving it a modern edge with the cut of the dress and the black lace tie. It feels a little “Working Girl” meets “Reality Bites”/”Singles,” no?
It’s fall, y’all! This transitional weather is the perfect time to experiment with contrasting textures. I love the sweet, feminine lace of this alice + olivia top paired with the slightly edgier pleated leather skirt and calf hair leopard bag. The short sleeves and knee length skirt are perfect for the never ending Houston heat, but the colors and textures scream autumn!
If ever anyone needed to choose an outfit for my caricature to depict what I truly love to wear, I’m positive well-fitting jeans and an embroidered top would be a safe choice. I just can’t turn down pretty embroidery! This top is by Tularosa, which has become one of my favorite lines for their lovely designs and approachable price point. (You can find another favorite Tularosa piece in this blog post.) I ordered this top online, and it came in just in time for my trip out west. A Palm Springs family wedding with my daughter serving as flower girl called for early arrival and a few days at Disneyland of course, but after checking out flights, we decided the best bet was to fly into Orange County and spend the day at the beach (natch) before heading to Anaheim. I like to wear jeans on planes to stave off the freezing air and disguise any spills my children inevitably cause, so topping my outfit with my Levi’s denim jacket was a no brainer. Once we arrived at the John Wayne Airport (honestly THE BEST airport ever if you’re heading to SoCal), I quickly changed into cutoffs, and this top served perfectly as a chic cover-up en route to Laguna Beach’s stunning Crescent Bay. This picturesque cove was the perfect playground for the kids, and I had a chance to read my book without interruption and execute some serious people watching behind my sunnies!
Denim is always a go to for me, especially a soft chambray…perfect for the impending summer heat! I found this cute little shirtdress while shopping recently at Splendid, and something about it just screamed PERFECT SUMMER STAPLE! It is one of those dresses you can wear three times in one week and not even feel bad about it! Plus, with the simple cut and neutral color, you can change it up with accessories each time you wear it. I’m certainly loving this Splendid sleeveless version, but I linked to several others below in varying fits and shades of chambray. I especially love this long sleeved option by KUT from the Kloth. Slightly more tailored, it could be a great way to embrace casual Friday during the dog days of summer when jean sounds about as fun as fur boots. I’m also feeling the ombrè effect of this AG Jeans dress.
