In the fashion world, this month marks the arrival of all things spring – brighter colors, lighter fabrics, and slinkier shoes. But here in Houston, March also brings the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to town, with the Cattle Baron’s Ball hot on its heels in April. Both of these amazing events call for cowgirl chic, which is admittedly outside my fashion comfort zone. The truth is, I am much more George Harrison than George Strait (oh the shame, I know!), but I do love any opportunity to break out my favorite thrifted cowboy boots! I prefer to put a boho spin on my rodeo look with colorful, ethnic-inspired pieces layered on top of crisp, white basics.
I purchased these vintage cowboy boots many years ago while shopping at Urban Outfitters with my law school roommate. She found them first, but they turned out to be my size and she graciously handed them over. Now that’s a true friend…thanks, Caroline! I haven’t spotted thrifted boots in there since that day, but just a few miles away stands the most impressive selection of vintage cowboy boots I’ve seen. Located in the Montrose neighborhood, Texas Junk Company offers vintage boots, clothing, hardware, frames, and even a great selection of 8-tracks! This uber cool resale shop makes a great destination even for those not in the market for thrifted goods. It is within walking distance to some of Houston’s most unique outposts — Reeve’s Antiques for the best mid-century furnishings, Lankford Grocery & Market for real deal, old-fashioned burgers, Bar Boheme for fabulous cocktails and incredible people watching, and Baby Barnaby’s for delicious brunch and my very favorite brownie à la mode!
You may think I’m crazy for wearing head to toe light colors to the rodeo, but I love wearing white. And I really don’t mind a good laundry challenge! I adore an all white look for spring and summer. It provides the perfect canvas for fun and colorful accessories. Besides, I’m not planning on participating in any mutton bustin’ this year anyway! 😉
