The swallow has historically been considered a symbol of the spring awakening and revival of life. It is still seen as a spring messenger of happiness as poets have praised it and it can be seen in classical Chinese painting resting on a flowering peach branch. The Egyptians believe the swallow sings of the first signs of a new love, and for some, the swallow symbolizes fertility and renewal, a harbinger of good and a symbol of transformation. For the pilgrim to Mecca, the swallow is the symbol of constancy and faith, and is said to fly to that holy city each year. Swallows mate for life, representing fidelity and loyalty; however, in Japan, a swallow can be a symbol of unfaithfulness. The Chinese say a swallow symbolizes daring, danger and a change for good in the future. In any event, when I spied this gorgeous, swallow embellished Essentiel Antwerp top at Anthropologie I knew I had to snag it for it’s uniqueness. The blush color and the black and white beaded swallows that flutter across the front had me the moment I saw it.
Apparently other designers are searching for the good fortune that swallows will bring to their fashionable nests. Merely search “swallow print” and you will find it on everything from t-shirts to belts to jewelry. Even dresses and skirts with these forked-tailed birds of good fortune are flying off the shelves. Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney both have numerous pieces in their collections with these trans-formative birds playing a prominent role in the design. In addition to his clothes, McQueen has the swallow perched on bracelets and scarves. McCartney has awakened her line with shirts, jackets and dresses showcasing the swallow. The swallow embellishment can be found on high end as well as less expensive labels. The bird is taking over and we love it (well, not Chandra as she has such a fear of birds that she would not even proof this post…). So, you may not catch Chandra feeding the birds, but you might just find her wrapped in this gorgeous Alexander McQueen scarf hiding from one of these beautiful birds! However, I think the perfect “it’s Summer and I love my sister gift” is this bracelet from the same line. It will look perfect on her wrist as she is busy channeling Tippi Hedren!
These shoes, oh these shoes! Do you have one article of clothing that no matter what is going on in your life, jut slipping it on makes you feel better? These Christian Louboutin spiked sandals are my swagger shoes. I just feel ready to conquer anything with them on my feet. Not only to they give me some height, they give me a lot of sass! No, these aren’t every day or even every month shoes, but they are so much fun to wear and spice up any outfit.
Perhaps my favorite element of the shirt is the versatility. I paired it with black jersey joggers from Gap and dressed the look up with spike trimmed high heeled sandals to mix in a little edge. However, I can see this shirt with white jeans for a casual Summer ensemble or a fun pair of satin shorts and wedge sandals for a night on the town. My adoration of clothes that you can dress up or down, sassy or sweet summoned me to this beautiful piece. I just hope the message it inspires is indeed happiness. Birds remind us of many positive things: to sing, to soar and to spread our wings!
