Eight years ago, my husband and I traveled to L.A. to watch the Horns play for the national title. Alabama came away victorious, which didn’t necessarily hurt my Aggie feelings (which were still fully Big 12-rivalry envious at the time…I might feel differently these days!), but the trip was worth it because of a fun side trip to Malibu and Santa Barbara and all of the fabulous meals we had in SoCal that weekend. The standout for me, hands down, was Madeo. With its low ceilings and nondescript appearance, this West Hollywood Italian joint absolutely relies on consistent, authentic, delicious food to keep its doors rotating. It’s been around forever, and the celebs flock there as a place to see and be seen without really seeing and being seen. I didn’t spot anyone famous, but I did find the holy grail of pasta bolognese! The sauce was rich and meaty, and I’ve contemplated planning trips back west just to order this dish. I supposed it was probably my first real deal bolognese, and I’ve since been on a mission to find something even remotely comparable. This recipe is just about as good as it gets! It evokes that same richness, and the all-day simmering is one of my favorite things to do on a chilly rainy day like today. This is solidly on my list of go-to recipes that will easily please any crowd!
Archives for February 2018
Y’all, I cannot handle this dreary weather anymore! What is going on? I’ve loved that Houston has actually had a winter this year, loved bundling up and building fires, loved wearing sweaters and boots. But I need a little sunlight! When it comes back, here’s what I plan to wear: white, white, and more white! White linen really is the epitome of springtime, and my favorite way to transition to the warming weather is to pair it with a little leather and some black accessories. It says “I’m so over winter, but I’m still too chilled to bare my toes or expose my arms.”
I adore the look of a cozy sweater when the weather is chilly. Unfortunately for me (and my bank account), I am super sensitive to most sweaters, and cashmere seems to be the only thing I can wear without needing to take twenty-seven Benadryls! Cashmere tends to be pricier and slightly more high maintenance than regular wool or cotton sweaters, solidly placing it in the splurge category. Luckily, as winter is winding down, this time of year is perfect to shop for these timeless sweaters. Most are on sale, and as long as you stick with basic solids or traditional stripes or prints, you can get years of wear out of them. I’ve linked to several great cashmere sweaters below, all of which are ON SALE (!!), priced under $200 (including a fabulous one under $50), and feature timeless silhouettes and colors. This Vince crewneck I’m wearing is 40% off with both free shipping and free returns.
Although Houston is having its first real winter in quite a few years (which I have LOVED!), we’re starting to get hints that spring is on its way. Little League has kicked off, Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo is just around the corner, and gala season is in full swing. When trying to decide what to wear for a dressy but not formal event, an L.B.B. (Little Black Blazer) is key for adding a little polish to any look. I often reach for my favorite Theory black blazer to pull a look together. Springtime, however, gives us a great opportunity to think outside the L.B.B. box! What better way than pretty pastels?!
Timeless pieces have a place in every woman’s wardrobe, especially those of us inching our way up in age! The older I get, the more I really try to be more intentional about the items I buy. And though I do love a good trend, my goal is to put my investment more into classic looks that will work from season to season and last for years without looking dated. I’ve put together a list of some pieces I think are timeless staples, and I’ve tried to include a variety of price points because classy looks can be found in any budget!
